Buy Smart – Stay Safe

Coventry Citizens Advice, working with the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), is helping consumers stay safe when buying second-hand items, especially baby products and electrical goods.
Buying second-hand items can be a great way to reduce costs and support sustainability, but some products may pose risks to you and your loved ones if they are not safe. Always check that instructions are available, look for a recognised safety standard mark and search GOV.UK for product recalls before use. Only use items that are complete, undamaged and in good condition.
Some items should never be bought second-hand, including car seats, mattresses, microwaves or hair straighteners.
Buying from private sellers requires extra caution. Learn to recognise warning signs to protect both yourself and your money, as online platforms do not always provide buyer protection. Always check the platform’s terms and conditions. Buy carefully by asking questions, testing items and using reputable sellers and protected payment methods. Keep receipts and records and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, walk away.
Please have a look at our more detailed information leaflets and if you are still unsure, please get in touch with us. We’re here to help.
